What an amazing story.
 
One if the fondest memories of my youth was going to the local air show and watching the Lightning do a slow pass followed by a full reheat near vertical climb. The noise and vibration was absolutely incredible.

I can imagine that would have been quite the sight to see. That thing was build for speed and fast climbing.
