My wife says she would prefer reliability rather authenticity in the tach and speedo. I think it is fun to see the speedo pegged and the tach needle swinging wildly between three and six thousand rpm- even when the car is idling at a light. Anybody know of an electronic tach that would fit in the Spitfire instrument panel? Are they expensive?

Not to be a wise guy, but have you cleaned or replaced your cables?

About the tach. If the tach cable treatments do not correct your problem and you are still interested in the electronic tach route, I have heard of the Jag tach fitting. When I was thinking of getting the Mallory dual point dizzy (it has no mechanical tach drive), I was advised that the Jag tach would work. You have to be sure so check it out. There are different Jag tachs, however, some one will direct you to the right one I am sure. I did not go the Mallory distributor route. The advantage over a properly tweaked stock dizzy did not warrant the expense of the Mallory.

1975 and later Spitfires had an electronic tachometer, and the face matches the 1973 and later gauges. Alternatively, you could have the current tach rebuilt...and you might want to make sure there's no problem with the cable (which might only need a bit of lubrication?).

Autometer makes a 4" Cobra Tach for V8 applications. For $25 the Autometer factory can reprogram the tach for a 4 or 6 cylinder. This tach looks great, matches well and works terrifically. Very stable needle. Current American electronic technology. It does have a chrome full-vee bezel, so you may need to change your other bezels to match, like I did. You can get more info at www.autometer.com
I got my tach from www.summitracing.com
