Tachometer

Alright....so basically from that article I can fix it or send it off for repair (to the tune of a couple hundred bucks?).

I actually have a function generator (a nice 3k piece of computer equipment) that'll produce the proper pulses. However, it says his was still off by 1000 at 5000 RPM. I honnestly want something that's EXACT.

The only guage that I really trust is my gas guage. The speedo is intermittent at best (cable issue I bet), the oil and water temp read, but who knows how accurate (usually reads at 190 F/40 for oil).

What other current options are there?

Ben

I supose if it was me I would fix the spedo cable first.

Then I would get another tac from ebay and see if that fixed the prob. but then I always spend twice and fix once.

Since you have a signal generator and you know you're gauge is off by 1k at 5k, why not open up the tach and look for a trim pot to bring it back into calibration. Some RVI and most RVC tachs will have this potentiometer on the circuit board.

If you do set the calibration, be sure and re-check the readings of the finished and installed tach by comparing it with a known-good gauge. Perhaps you have a tune-up tachometer that will read as high as 4-5k RPM that can be used as a reference.
