Hi Roger,
This started after you had the carbs rebuilt and put them back on your car ? What you have said about the idle speed dropping lower and lower at a stop light ( heat build up under the bonnet )is exactly how mine acts. No amount of adjusting will fix it. My car has done this since I put it back on the road three years ago. When the weather is cool, I never really notice a problem. When the weather warms back up to 75 ' or so the idle speed starts to drop at a stop light. Once I go down the road a mile or so, the heat build up under the bonnet is gone so when I first come to a stop light on a warm day, the car idles at the correct speed and then slowly drops again the longer I stand still at a stop light. Once your car starts this symptom, drive to a parking lot and raise the bonnet to let the heat escape. Does the problem seem to go away or at least not be as noticeable ?
Did you put the same heat shield back on under the carbs ? Did you wash the heat shield with water when it was off your car ? I talked to Steve Byers about this problem and he told me that he used to have the same problem. His original asbestos heat shield was worn thin over the years. Just like mine is now. Steve told me he built a new heat shield by using a piece of " hardiboard " sandwiched together between a 2nd heat shield that he got from a parts car. That cured his symptoms. I was going to build up my heat shield the next time I take the carbs off my car as I really think that the heat build up under the bonnet at an idle is what triggers the idle speed slowly dropping at a stop light on a warm day.
