tachometer cable has a hole in it

While driving out 1960 BT7, my wife noticed a drops of really dark fluid on her leg. Once home, I checked under the dash and discovered that our tachometer cable has a tiny hole in it (we have not had this happen before). Is this something I can just tape up and go on or is it a "park and order a new cable" kind of situation. Attached are the photos of before and after wiping the cable.

Why does it have a hole? Rubbing on something sharp? Is the inner cable intact?
 
But why is there oil in the tach cable? it should be dry.. you really don't want oil leaking into the cable and getting pumped into the tach.
 
Fair chance the inner cable was replaced at some point and is slightly too long, forcing it to rub hard on the sheath. Can't use heat shrink unless you take a connector off an end. Unfortunately, I don't think you can put the connector back on in a home shop. If you want original, buy a new cable assy. If you aren't concerned about appearance, you could slit a piece of fuel hose and clamp it over the hole.

I wrapped in gorilla tape and after a 2 1/2 hour drive yesterday, it appears this is acceptable. I think I'm going to order a new cable from Ahead4Healeys and replace in the Fall (when it's cooler in the garage).
