Late last night I got a call from the school district PR folks (I work for a school district as the DBA/webmaster) that we were closing our district through Monday due to 3 possible cases. I had to post info on our sites as well as send out a bunch of other bits (email, text alerts, etc.).

https://www.pcschools.us

Our spring break was 2 weeks ago, and we do have quite a few families head down towards Mexico for the week. Didn't think it would effect us here in the mountains, but there you go. Me, I get a 5-day weekend, though I hope the kids in question are okay.

We're a globe trottin' bunch, us humans. And gregarious to boot. If that thing gets a foot-hold in our species (and apparently has) the CDC and all th' King's Men ain't gonna get it back inna bottle. This can get ugly REAL fast. I see photos of folk walkin' around with all manner of face masks and think: we're also a gullible and superstitious bunch.

Wash yer HANDS a lot and carry some "moist towelettes" in yer pocket. Avoid sneezers. Use yer noggin.

Not much concerned simply because there is little I can do to change it anyway. I think it might be best to get it and get it over with so I can enjoy the summer and laugh at CNN. Oh, that's right, I am going to enjoy the summer and laugh at CNN anyway.

We have 3 cases here as of yesterday, 2 in central Maine and one in the southern part of the state. I doubt we had many travelers from Mexico but who knows how the thing travels?

May be overrated, may not be. I'd still prefer to avoid getting it.

[Now they're saying 5 cases here, one from yesterday is not swine flu after all, and there are 3 new ones.]

Gang,

I teach in Central California that has a large number of transcient workers. In the town I live a elementary school was closed with two students positively testing for swine. And in the district I teach in there is a probability of at least one case.

May God protect us all...

Cheers,

As in the days of the plague, nature will take it's sweet time and it's due course. Man can start and stop a lot of things, but that fact that we still don't have the cure for a common cold should tell us all something about what nature can do better than us.

We made national news this morning -- our district was featured on CNN for the closure.

Because we had to postpone the Prom.

I guess that explains the nation's priorities, now doesn't it.

I had not heard of this flu until this past Sunday. I order a part for my moms car (they live in Mexico) My folks had plans to go to Mexico city for a vacation and this part was key (blower for AC). She tells me the part got there ok, instsalled and works quite well but the plans had been cancelled because of this "Swine Flu" outbreak. I wake up Monday AM and the radio man says that the CDC has closed a local school becasue 13 cases showed up. Spring break to Cancun was the cause. Now I hear it all over the news and I have not heard from my parents since then.

This got me wondering. Seems that for the last 2 weeks around here (southern New England) we've been besieged by flu news wherever I look: TV news, news websites, papers, radio, etc. Even cell phone (SMS) "ads".

Just wondered what sources you look to for "what's going on in the world".

Thanks.
Tom

Well, we just got our first two reported cases here in S. Fl., one down by Miami, and the other across the state in Bonita Springs. They are now reporting that this is really not the fearsome strain as first reported, and is much weaker than first anticipated and not nearly as resistant to vaccines as they originally thought. That said, with normal flu season precautions plus all the media hype so far, it seems things will not be as dire as first predicted!! Stay well!

Welcome to the entire world Mr Swine Flu... Kuwait is now requiring every traveler that goes through there to be checked at a medical clinic within 72 hours of arrival. Now, for me this kinda sucks, as I have to go through there in about 3 weeks on the way home, and I have to trust their medical professionals. I don't trust any of those guys to cut my hair, never mind anything at a clinic. But if I don't its a month is Kuwaiti Prison and a 50 Dinar fine (that's about $200US). I guess its pretty serious.

Whats next? Monkey Flu?

"Swine Flu" - Past tense of "Pigs Fly"?

Well, we now have the first confirmed case in Utah. My district is now closed until at least May 11. We employees were told specifically to not enter any of our buildings without the Superintendent's permission, so I get a week off (mostly).

The student in question (1 of 6 possible cases, the others still to be determines) is already doing better, so that's good news.

I've got some work I can do remotely, but it does give me a bit more time for working on the Tunebug. Silver linings and all that...
