Can you say "short-sighted"? OPEC have agreed to cut production by a significant amount in order to "stabilise" (i.e. RAISE) prices again, so guess what? Gas is going up again despite the apparent fall in demand.

Not wishing to start another gas price debate here, just amazed that so few people seem to keep an eye on things as they should.

Yep - kinda reminds me of the 1970s. In the gas crisis, we downsized from V8 gas guzzlers to 4 cylinder put-puts ... and went right back again.

PS - oil contracts closed at $33/bbl today. Down a measly $100 from a few months ago ....
 
A new, made in America, hybrid seems to have been overshadowed by the falling oil prices. Read a review in todays Los Angeles Times about the new Ford Fusion hybrid. The reviewer averaged 52 MPG in city/freeway driving. The pricing isn't too bad, about 27K as equipped (nicely) and there is still a federal tax credit so gets the effective cost down to 25K. Not too bad for a mid size car these days but will have to see if it sells. Consumers still play a huge part in the auto/gas price crisis and seem prone to forgetting recent lessons way too fast.
 
And .... I am betting that the purchasers of new S.U.V.`s and Light Trucks will be some of the first in line to complain when prices do take that inevitable hike in price.
Do we have an S.U.V.? Yes. Do we need an S.U.V.? Absolutely! Do we drive it on a daily basis? Not unless we HAVE TO! Is it new? Absolutely not!
It is our "Get through the mountain pass vehicle when we absolutely have to go in inclement weather".
We also own and drive four other 4 cylinder vehicles for basic transportation when ever possible.
 
It's a TOOL, Kerry. Use it when ya NEED it.

Well, that article just kinda justified what I have been thinking all along. People have been criticizing the American auto industry for not building car the American public wants. I DISAGREE! A lot of people like bigger cars and are just looking for a reason to buy one. Is it smart? No, I don't think so, but they do it anyway. Now that GM and Chrysler have their bailout money they will start building smaller cars, but eventually will start back with big trucks again. By the way, what are (or were) the 2 top selling vehicles in the world? Ford trucks and GM trucks.

I read a very interesting letter, purpotedly from the head of Knox Machinery, a supplier to the auto industry...

He raises some common sense points that seem to have been laid by the wayside by the auto execs.

See if you can search up the letter, might find interesting reading. And for me it is NOT political, just ethical and moral..

I remember, way back in Eisenhower days, the concern that was going around that Studebaker would close. It would be the end of a venerable INDUSTRY, not just an auto company.... Well, 50 + years later, same concern.....
 
The car-buying public's attention span is obviously much shorter these days. It's like the goldfish swimming around its bowl; oh look, there's a castle....oh look, there's a castle. They deserve all they get coming to them when gas prices go back up.

I can't help seeing it as a pointless waste of resources for those who can easily afford it.

Sure I use 15 gal/weekend in the race car & more in the tow vehicle but...

I don't think driving a guzzler qualifies as a hobby.

You folks remember leaded and unleaded & how the regular nozzle was larger and wouldn't fit in newer cars?
How about discouraging the use of anything under 30 mpg by forcing them to buy expensive gas?

gentlemen our problems are solved- the gov is going to print enough money to buy everyone's house from foreclosure bail out the banks & Automotive industry- salvage the Insurance fiasco and probably give us all a stimulus check to go on vacation- I just wish it was Christmas Eve so I could see what Santa is bringing me!!!!!!!!! :thirsty:
