Sorry if this has been covered before, but I'm looking for the proper black paint for the suspension components for the BJ7 I'm restoring. Glossy or satin finish? I imagine the same finish would be used throughout the car where components were supposed to be black?

I'm using Eastwood 'Extreme' chassis black gloss which is quite tough as far as paint goes but isn't that good to paint onto cast surfaces because the black pigments pull away from the high points. Have done all the black stuff now in it and despite the above, I'd still go with it again.

Buy a small cheapie top-feed spray gun that you can leave hanging on the wall with paint in it, that saves a heap on aerosol cans and is ok for a couple of weeks without drying out.

I used the satin version of the paint for the heater box and will do the petrol tank in satin too I think.

I spoke with Roger Moment last weekend and asked the exact same question. His reply was Eastwood's satin extreme chassis black was the closest.

A friend of mine told me to use Gloss Black engine paint. Works great on bare metal.

Thanks guys. Since my post above I have communicated with a well known Healey restorer here in the Northwest who says he uses a paint that "...is not a full gloss".

I know we're talking BJ7 here, but remember that the heater on a BN1 and BN2 is wrinkle-finish black. I think Eastwood has that in an aerosol, which should be enough as I don't think anything else on the car is that kind of finish.

Early wiper motor housings and heater trapdoors are crinkle finish too, or are at least on a 57 BN4. I used VHT crinkle finish which requires heat to cure and looks just right after a toasting on the heat gun.
 
Used the Eastwood products as well - have had great results with them and the color match for touch up is great, and ther is always touch up....
