So how much is a brand new pair of SU HS6's worth.

Don, Valuing these classic parts is a real craps shoot but $350 seems a bit low. From what I can see, rebuilts go for about $500 (plus a substantial core charge), new for $1500. Of course, that would be from a "trusted" supplier and with a guarantee. It would seem logical to deduct 10 or 20 percent from there but logic does not always apply. Personally, I'd prefer the original carbs and wonder where the new ones come from. Not much of an answer, is it. Tom
 
A new pair of HS6 are only about $550 (plus shipping) directly from SU (now owned by Burlen Fuel Systems). And I am guessing that their list price is significantly more than their wholesale price, meaning that you might be able to buy them cheaper through a reseller willing to take a smaller markup.

But be warned that not all HS6 carbs are created equal. Just like overdrives, they were also used on other applications (notably Volvo) and there are several significant differences (eg float bowl angle). There were also some "emissions" versions with features like thermally sensitive jets that are considered troublesome.
 
Fortunately on the HS series carbs there is a spacer between the float bowl and carb body that can be replaced to achieve a level float bowl when the carbs have come from another application (like Volvo). The thermostatic jet that Randall mentioned is typically referred to as a Waxstat. You can disassemble a Waxstat jet and replace the temperature compensator with (3) pennies, crimp it back together and have the equivalent of "normal" jet tubes. In short, with a bit of effort you can make almost any HS series carb perform to your personal satisfaction.

Just trying to explain that they aren't necessarily a "bolt-on" proposition.

Really? Not arguing but the angle on my 122s is totally different than the TRs.
 
Perhaps then the value would depend on the exact match for application? Tom

That's the point I was trying to make. On HS series SUs the float bowl angle is set by a keyed spacer washer between the float bowl and the carb body. Different angled spacers are available and you can change them to get what you need to have a level float bowl.
 
FWIW, last time I looked, one of the keyed washers was not available in the appropriate angle for a TR. That was some years ago, though, so perhaps it is available now.

Another point to watch for, some carb pairs have one of the float bowls between the carbs (similar to the H6 setup on the TR); while the TR HS6 setup has the linkage there and the float bowls outside.
 
I bought them from Moss UK at the turn of the century or just passed. They are not Volvo carbs.
