I know the Haynes manual for the spridget tells you how to set the carbs when the engine is warm but what settings do you use to get the car to run until it is warm or am I missing something /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Catch 22

Move south?

(Thinking about it myself)

Weather is better there but....
Watkin's Glen, BeaveRun, Nelson & Mid-O are here.
What would I do??......Turn into some street racer.
Loose my license & have fits of horrible, racer envy-induced depression. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It's worked fer me.

There ~is~ Sebring, Homestead. Daytona has a twisty part... Atlanta's mmm... 'bout eight hour tow.

If you lower your jets (pull the choke all the way out)

Turn the car to run for a few seconds to fill the float chambers. (not start)

Lift the carb pistons & check the level of gas w/ a torch. (If you're not British, use a flashlight)

Cuz that's how accidents happen /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

At the jet where the needles go into it them. Should see gas in them about level with the "stage": The top of the jet hole.

Saw this pretty girl in a nice BIG truck couple of days ago.

A quick check of the rear end verified that she did, in fact, have a 2" Reese mount. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, really.

hello Willie,

the only adjustment required from cold is the idle speed, which you adjust on the choke linkage (Cold idle about 1,000 to 1,200 and hot about 700. I notice a lot of people here run a high idle speed but I suggest as slow as it will run smoothly is best).
There is no cold start mixture adjustment except for how far out you pull the choke knob.

Just wondering:
You've got the main jet turned all the way "up" and then unscrew "down" two turns (or "12 flats")....right?

Check float level to see that it is about right. Bowl should be mostly full when you remove the top of float bowl.

Be sure that plastic line to main jet and bottom of float bowl is clear and clean. And piston needle moves smoothly, right?

Be sure intake manifold is not loose/leaking vacuum.

And, timing is about correct and got good spark and clean plugs...right?

I raced at MO, but I would still like to do Watkins Glen and Lime Rock some day as well as Road America

I raced all the Florida tracks except Homestead and don't really care for any of them. On the other hand Greenville, SC is a great town for a racer as for a tow time to good tracks.

Road Atlanta 1.5 hours
Carolina Motorsports Park 2 hours
Roebling Road 4.5 hours
VIR 4.5 hours

Then to just rub in it a bit more, my shop in the downtown Greenville area has everything one would need at it's fingertips

5 Parts houses withing 5 miles
Best machine shop in town 6 miles
Best fastner shop in town 1/2 mile
Surplus metal place 2 miles
Paint supply store 2, within 5 miles
Welding supply store, 2 within 7 miles
Aeroquip hose supplier/maker 2 within 4 miles
Race gas 4 miles
Plating company 5 miles
Greenville Tech, which offer engine rebuiling race, street OEM, body repair and painting, custom body fab, Motorsports, engine dyno, tool and die classes, 6 miles
Best chili dogs on the planet 1/2 mile /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Then no more than 30 minutes away, add powder coaters, exhaust header coating, tool and die shops, chassis dynos, REM polishing, race supply shops, Surface hardening (cryo & nitriting) etc., etc, etc, you name it you can get it here within a 30 minute ride across town or closer.

Then add to it we probably have a 100 road racers in town. Not a bad place to live if you road race.

G'day Willie,
If you're setting the mixture on HS type SUs, I use a baseline setting of one-and-a-half turns (or 9 flats) from fully lean on the mixture nut, to get it warm. I setup the baseline idle as per Piman's description above.

everything seems in order, tried it today with the spare starter in but still the old battery and the starter lasted about 4 turns before it went dead. Still juice in the battery as the lights, air horns and everything else works, so pulled the first starter apart and 2 of the brushes were stuck down flush with the plastic holder, they are about 1/4" long so as long as I have it apart I may as well replace them and clean everything up and then pull the second one apart and check it also, and of course replace the battery.
