Superior German engineering my patootie!

Warning - Work related rant.

So what’s all this manure about the German engineering? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

I’m performing an acceptance test on a new system for one of my customers and everything is going smoothly until I take the system for a drive.

For the record where talking about a Dodge (Mercedes Benz) Sprinter Van with the MB I6 turbo diesel and one of my employer’s security x-ray screening devices in the coach/cargo box - used for screening vehicles.

Anyway of all the high tech sophisticated, delicate & expensive equipment to give me grief it’s the Mercedes platform! On it’s first road trip as part of the shake down I get an engine light in the dash. Looking at the owners manual – all it says it that it’s for the “Engine control unit management”. Luckily I’ve got a dodge dealership just a half mile up the road but after taking it in it looks like I won’t know the status until sometime late this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

This is a PITB because I still haven’t finishing all of what I’ve got to do and I’ve got a couple guys flying out from the east coast to perform the acceptance for the customer. So if the van isn’t back up & running this afternoon – those guys are going to be PO’ed and I won’t get acceptance done until the next time they’re in town – whenever that will be.

Again – I don’t know what the engine light is for – according to the service manager it could be any one of a hundred different things. I hopeful it’s something simple but even if it is I doubt they’ll have it back to us until sometime tomorrow. So I’m not holding my breath for any good news.

Ok, rant over.

I feel better now...

Maybe the Germans know of your mysterious plot?

Ok the latest is that the engine light was because of a faulty airflow sensor in the intake. Should have it back tomorrow afternoon if I'm lucky.

Problem is we should have finished acceptance on the new system by that time so I've got bodies (our's & the customers') standing around twiddling their thumbs.

As an interim fix - I approached the customer about moving on to the next system and testing that one while I sort the problems with this one out. They agreed - so my boss & I arranged to have the other system in the next port ready to go for them tomorrow afternoon.

With any luck (something severely lacking in my life of late) I should have the system available for acceptance late Wednesday and finish up on Thursday.
