Got my tickets yesterday: Invitation to friends' house for food, beer, BS and some incidental football viewing. feh. 15-second ad spots going for near-as-dammit $3M... All absurd.

For the price of that excursion, one could go to Carnival in Rio!

There oughtta be a "Boycott the Insanity" movement instead of this goofy "outbid the other guy" attitude. Stop spending all that money on "sports" and instead go to local events and fund kids' teams. Get the little urchins moving off the couch. The "pro" teams have become something less than good role models anyhow. It's become too much about "Big Business" and not enough about sports, IMO.

Man it is good to read what you've put there. Think of how much better we'd all be if kids actually spent time doing stuff with their families, and the families actually did rational local things instead of just buying stuff to "outdo the neighbors".

No thanks needed, Tom. I fear societal "conditioning" will-out. Too many with the attitude: "MY Bears (Penguins, Giants, Rams, whatever)"... my comments are coming from a long-held cynicism over "organized sports" in general. We can wish in one hand 'til eternity but it ain't likely to make a difference.

I believe it was Harlan Ellison who said: "99% of EVERYTHING is Tribal bulls**t."

That "my tribe" attitude is inbred in a majority of humans, IMO. It'll be our undoing. So far, it is an insurmountable obstacle to human survival. The giant re-evaluation it would take to change is unlikely.

Couldn't agree more, Doc. When the Oakland Raiders
were sold to Los Angeles; then sold back to Oakland
with demands for a new stadium and they got it, I wrote
'em off.

When the professional baseball players went out on
strike, I wrote 'em off.

And the Pros of now are such poor role models that
they've lost social value.

Now its all about money. The antics of the industry
are right up there (or right down there) with the
likes of Paris Hilton, as an example. Incredible
potential wasted on ego and selfishness.

Now, where's my whiskey and what's the score again?

Well, if 63,000 people paid avg $200/ticket (a *low* average), the gate takes in $12,600,000. One game. Now consider the players' already contracted salaries.

I think I'll contribute $200 to my local high school library, and go watch "Sometimes a Great Notion" (Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, 1971).

But, it's the general publics own fault. They have to keep those over paid nit whits in $ 100,000 cars and million dollar mansions somehow. Making that kind of money sure makes you wonder sometimes what's real and what isn't. Personally, I wouldn't give 5 bucks to watch the whole thing. I can spend my money better else ware. JMHO. PJ

Many folks probably agree about the ridiculous salaries and "wastes" in pro sports, but they don't say anything 'cuz their buddies don't say anything either?

The unbroken circle of wanting to "fit in".

I think guys just enjoy the game(s) so much.
Maybe played during high school/college and can
appreciate what it takes to play and win.
The fans I can understand. The greed; ego and
general lack of dicipline amongst the players and
owners are what sets me off.
 
Football, basketball, Nascar, etc., etc., etc....opiates of the masses!!!
