Hi - new user thought i would give this place a try. I have a question, when changing the sump gasket on a 76 B do you need to raise the motor to get the pan off?

You should get a copy of the Bentley Manual. It is a great source of reference after you learn what you can from the forum. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
If you can get to all the oilpan bolts, then I'd say no you shouldn't have to raise the engine... I can't remember though if 76 has the same front crossmember as the 77, but in mine, the front of the pan 'just' sits over the crossmember a bit... those bolts might be hard to reach.
 
I've removed the oil pan from a '79 without removing or raising the engine (however, the motor mounts were pretty new & hadn't sagged).....biggest problem is the bolts along the front edge under the suspension beam...tricky & I had to use a small wrench with lots of patience....
