Summer road trip [Western U.S.]

I wouldn't want to miss the Rolex Monterey Reunion, but I think it's in August. It rivals Goodwood and you can get up close and personal to great rare historic cars, drivers, mechanics and famous of same. My biggest thrill was to just shake hands with Bobby Rahul and just thank him for all the great races. Truly nice people there, both in the pits and the crowd. Only regret was not going up to Mario Andretti for same. I watched him wring the living daylights out of the Lotus 79 he won the F1 GP championship in back in the day. Alain de Cadenet was great to talk to, at length, about his 'Victory by Design' Series.

Hey folks,

The wife and I are discussing dragging the children out for their first serious road trip. basically, the idea is to drive from Phoenix to Seattle taking the Coastal route on the way north and driving home through Utah. This is the last real part of the country I've never seen. I know there's a lot of BCF folks in this part of the country.

So, if we were to do this in a roughly 2 week span in the summer what would you all recommend in terms of must see locations along the route? Keep in mind the kids are 11 and 2.5. Car related items are of great interest but I have to balance that this non car specific items. We also may pop up to Vancouver just so that the kids get another county to Mark on the map as visited.

Many thanks on advance!
Jody

Barring a major earthquake there is no coast highway from Arizona to British Columbia. --elrey :jester:

Well, we did base the lower part of our trip on the San Andreas fault line. So, should the epic earthquake occur we'll have a lot more coastline to follow.

We are driving through the night from Phoenix to San Francisco, as that's already fairly well known territory for us, so in my head the trip really starts once we reach San Francisco.

One of these days you will have to visit the Central Coast. [If it still exists.] Have a grand time! --elrey

Where are you staying your firist night? From your route you will be going past the Blackhawk museum, about 40 mins from SF in Danville. It closes at 5 pm. Might be a stop point and worth a couple hours.

I love that stretch. We have family that used to live in Santa Cruz. We'd drive out to LA and then up the coast. I'm saving that one for a long weekend with just the wife in a convertible LBC.

We're staying down on the Warf. Basically I plan on sedating the wife and kids on all the chocolate they can eat at Giradelli. :O)

We'll be coming into SF around 10 am, so it'd make a good stop. I'm adding it to the itinerary!

Thanks to everyone who recommended the Blackhawk Museum. It was one of the most amazing collections of cars that I have ever seen!

I opted to enjoy rather than try to photograph, but I snapped this one of the room from the upper viewing area for you guys!

Jody
Glad you enjoyed it. It is a car guys dream.

I got to meet a fellow BCF'er! Doug was kind enough to take us out to the Samoa Cookhouse, a great tour of Eureka (It's a very pretty town, even in the rain), and then we chatted about cars until late into the evening.

So far the trip has been amazing. We had one minor automotive issue that was resolved by me changing a tire in the garage of the hotel in San Francisco.

Tonight we're in Florence, Oregon. Tomorrow we'll make Portland!

Jody,

So glad that you enjoyed your visit.Thank you for leaving
the house as you found it.Did you try the Bridge Depot Cafe?

- Doug

Doug,

No, I got turned around heading out in the morning. So, that was my fail. We did stop in Trinidad and had a nice breakfast at a little place there.

Jody

Jody, If we were not heading to T-Town today I'd get together with you.

Don,

I'm finding that I've driven past or been quite near to a number of folks. Had this been a "dad car holiday" we would have made a lot more automotive related stops.

Tomorrow we start our southeastern leg of the journey heading back home. Across eastern WA, OR, through ID, into UT and finally back down to AZ. 2000 miles so far and a lot of fun!
