Even though it's called a 'box turtle', it's really a tortoise. I doubt it would taste very good and certainly not be worth the possible fine and imprisonment, if found out. About fifty years ago, I had one as a pet that I found, along with a number of other reptilians. He regularly went swimming with us in our little pool with the turtle, snakes, toads and lizards. They all were always getting out of their cages, went missing for months and would show up in the yard. One of the lizards, an Anole, tuned out to be blind but I didn't realize it until the box turtle snapped at it and nearly decapitated it. It all became clear why he never changed color. We gave him a nice funeral. Now most of the pets I've had are on some sort of threatened list, so we stick to dogs and cats. Not as interesting but someone has to feed them.
