Suggestions for tach gear rebuild?

My tach drive on the back of the generator started to make a strange sound, and I am guessing it needs to be rebuilt. Can someone make a suggestion as to who is reasonable and does a good job?

Is it OEM or a modern replacement?

My experience with the "new" ones is that the two halves don't fit together because they are nowhere near flat. When the unit gets warm with use, the grease pours out of the gap, making more noise and then...failure.
I have had success lapping each half and reassembling with a thin paper gasket and sealant.
 
It is an original. As soon as it started making odd noises, I immediately disconnected it. I will check out the unit, but any idea what it costs to rebuild one?

Take it apart by removing screws, clean all the old grease out, use a fluid of some sort, clean well. Lube with white grease like that used on fishing reels.

Test. Not much to go bad but a couple of gears and two bushings.

Make sure your tach drive cable isn't binding. Be a good idea to disassemble that as well and lube it. Cable will slide out the end that goes on the tach and then I coil them up in the bottom of a 5 gal pail and let them soak in motor oil for a while.

When you regrease it, be sure to use a very light grease like white or lithium grease. That li'l bugger is pretty fragile, and if it bogs down in heavy grease, it can break. While you're at it, be sure that the cable is well lubricated and spinning freely, and that nothing in the tach itself is binding. I broke mine a couple of times just because the tach mechanism was a little sluggish.
