Suggestions for drilling a hole in a grade 8 bolt?

Well Kevin. What was the outcome or did you give up and buy it?

I am a glutton for punishment. I ordered all the dichromate grade 8 bolts on line, have the drill bits I need, and will see if I won the die I need on Ebay tomorrow. As soon as everything gets here, I will be taking a shot at it. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for all of your help. I ended up using a combination of all your suggestions. The holes are perfect! The drill bit went through my bolts with ease. I guess it helps when you have the right tools and know what you're doing. Thanks again

That leaves me out!

Use a cobalt dill bit or M7 high strength steel bit. I just did a demo at one of my customers with the M7 bit drilling a 3/16" hole in a 1/2" grade 8 bolt. Then cutting off the head of the bolt by carefully moving the drill side to side. Not good practice but shows the strength of M7 steel.

Also if you don't have a thread die, use a nut to run down the shank of the bolt past where you will be drilling the hole. Then after drilling run the nut past the threads and it will clean them up.
