Sudden, strange problem with tach.

I just started my '69 Midget and the tach reacted oddly. When the ignition is on, engine running or not, the needle swings all the way to the opposite stop at 7000 and stays there. It does not respond to anything, just stays pegged at 7000. When the key is off, the needle goes to zero. Engine runs normally.

Any ideas what may have gone wrong while the car sat there doing nothing since the last time I drove it?

Pardon me while I bare my assumption. Well, it operates on 12+ and ground without any other current source. If it comes ungrounded, it simply should stop working.

Anyways, I pulled it and hooked it up to a 12vdc test source. Tach did nothing unusual. Huh. I opened it and inspected it, everything looks normal. I took it back to the car and hooked it up with a test lead for ground and turned on the ignition. It just sat there. I added a secure ground wire and reinstalled it and it works normally.

Whatever...

I can get my 2009 tag tomorrow, and I will fnally drive it legally on Tuesday. I supposed this is just it's way of messing with me.
