Sub wuffer installation

That's a pretty cool woofer. I haven't seen that type of design before.
greg, me needah! sounds great and the owners manual says it can double as a carrying case for one of them "new age" bowling balls. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif by the way she looked at the hummer but thought it too austere, no creature comforts to speek of, too high off the ground, poor visibility, and a rather harsh ride, in other words all the stuff i wanted hay i own a healey dont i? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Well the Hummer was more of a joke. Having someone mount the subwoofer outside the car. Course, you could always aim the brown note at the car behind you.

greg, /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif or swing the 50 cal. around. greg i havnt actually found a need for a sub w. in my healey the 4 westmarine speakers i installed do a good job and i only have to set the base adjustment about a third the way up to be satisfied with the sound even with the stainless exhaust resonating i believe the speaker enclosure is responsible for 80% of any given speakers performance capabilities and placement the other 20%, doctor "bose" has demonstrated that quite well. one mans bass is another mans tweeter!

Well it might be that the resonant frequency of the speaker may be a bit too high. Consequently, it can be lowered by cutting some of the outer lip away while monitoring its resonance point with an audio signal generator.--Just a thought that might save the box.---Keoke
Hi Keoke,
I appreciate the thought. The guys at Speaker City probably have the ability to do that. The FS is 37Hz for these drivers. I think I pushed the limit of small for the box though. The magnet looks like it takes up 30% or more of the volume of the vented section of the box. When I get the car back from the body shop and get everything re-installed, I’ll see where I stand with making a larger box. It’s only about $10 worth of MDF and my time. Plus I actually like doing that sort of thing.

Thanks Anthony,
I book marked that site. I have some books on speaker design and I’ve plugged the formulas into an Excel spread sheet. Most of those programs assume you are making a rectangular box, which I almost never do. I don’t like having opposing sides being parallel to each other. So figuring out box volume becomes a little more complicated. Here is the center channel for my 5.1 system. This box has eleven sides. A pain to build, but satisfying when it’s done. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yesnod.gif

Greg -

When are you gunna put that bad boy in your healey? Then I will be impressed.

Cheers

greg, thats a nice looking box ive seen lotsa guys try something like that but couldnt get the edges as nice, when i was about 15 years old i got hold of two 16" p.a. speakers that i wanted to build cabinets for using a formula similar to the one i sent you the darn things were spoze to be about the size of a refrigerator i trimmed them down and sold em to a neighborhood "garage" band i found out recently those knuckleheads are still playing together. im told the woofer in my wifes s.u.v. (as per picts)contains two base speakers facing each other maybe thats how they can make em that small? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

You are correct sir. When you face two speakers together (one wired out-of-phase), you double it’s ability to compress a volume of air sealed in an enclosure, minus the air cushion trapped between the two cones and some friction, etc. You can almost half the volume of the box as opposed to a single driver.
