TR6 SU or TR6 ZS carbs for my '66 TR4a?

Hi guys - still fighting with my ZS carbs so I'm considering a part of SU HS6 that I have on the shelf. They should bolt right up, right? Is it just the linkage that would be different?

As second option would be a set of ZS carbs from my TR6 be an option?

Thanks!

They should bolt right up. Some of the linkage parts were available new when I switched out the carbs on my '64 TR4 and other parts I had to source as used although they might now be available as new.

Tom,

All of mine of SU's, but the linkage should be the only difference. Do your SU's have all the linkage pieces?

Scott

I forgot to mention today that I have a pair of TR4 Z-S carbs. They need rebuilding

I don't know much about the condition of your various carb options, but I would not go to TR6 strombergs on a TR4, in fact I have been looking for TR4 4A strombergs off and on for my TR250 to replace the TR6 carbs now on the car.

The only problem I see with early strombergs is some parts, floats, etc, can be hard to find, but they were great on my 4a, really no different from SUs except the rubber diaphragm.

The later Strombergs are, in my opinion, the ones that gave Strombergs a bad name they are much more comlicated with more to get out of adjustment or go wrong, plus the mixture adjustment is harder and more limited.

What is the problem with your current strombergs?, sorry if it was already chronicled here and I missed it.

Hi guys.

I'm having a fuel issue where I believe I am not getting enough flow to keep up at anything beyond idle. Diaphragms are OK and I double checked today. Mixture is OK. Getting flow through the bowl at pump and filter.

These carbs has similar issues before they were professionally rebuilt (oh well) but am getting a similar issue again.

I just want to get her out and about at this point and am OK with the later ZS since I have a set that I know is good.

I'd rather go with SUs if anyone has a spare linkage.

There's a hint for you ...

Ha - yes Randall. That was sometime ago and they were put on the shelf thereafter but I get the hint.

I'm not sure which one it is but both of those cars have been sitting for some time. Possible that the fuel filter/pump screen is clogged? Sometimes you have to go through a bunch of filters after reviving these things. Something to think about...

Or any of the rubber hoses may be collapsed and not allowing proper flow. I would take a good look at the gas supply system Tank -> hoses/pipes/pump/filter... and if there is allot of junk it may have clogged the valve in the carb.

Thanks for the further update, my guess is it is not a carb problem, although I personally would not put later Z-S's on my car permanently, If I know them to be in good shape I might slip them on (makes it sound real easy huh?) juust to make sure if you can't find the fuel flow issue elsewhere.

I can't imagine what in the carbs would cause what you are describing, but if you swap carbs and it is still the same, or fixed, eaither way you have learned something about the nature of the problem.
