I want to make sure I am interpreting the instructions for adjusting the Float Lever correctly. "With the needle on its seating insert a 7/16" dia round bar." Ok, to me "on its seating" means the needle is depressed shutting off the fuel to the carb bowl. Am I correct?

That's the way I do it.

To me thats the starting point to set float hieght. correct fuel level is the goal and this is easiest checked by looking down the jet after cranking to see the level just below top of jet and holding during cranking.

Steve-Since most of the float valves are spring loaded and can be further depressed after contacting the seat, I think the instructions can be confusing. I believe the float level is correct when the float needle just contacts the seat without compressing the spring.

Berry and John. Thanks that was exactly where the confusion crept in. After I posted the question and sat back down at the bench and looked at it again that is the conclusion I came to as well. Thanks for the sanity check.

You guys are way more analytic than I. Your point is well taken. I on the other hand assumed that the needle would be on the seat and in the closed position with the bar underneath. Never thought about the rest.

I am just curious, but how much room is left in the bowl when the setting is correct, may be 3/8 of an inch before the top.

It should be easy to check. Fill the float bowl by operating the fuel pump, remove float lid and inspect. Also, the fuel level in the bowl will be at the same level as in the jet.
