SU Fuel Pump

OK, couple of questions.

(1) Exactly how does the SU fuel pump mount in the car? Mine was gone when I bought "Molly" and I don't know exactly where it goes or how it mounts.

(2) I have picked up a nice looking used pump but I would like to have it rebuilt before I try using it since I don't know its history. Can anyone reccommend a good SU fuel pump rebuilder?

(3)Is rebuilding this fuel pump a job I could or should do myself?

On a '77 MGB, the fuel pump was locatd such that part of it resided in the boot. There would have been a small black box covering the portion in the boot itself. I believe there was a change to the battery box on the single batteried MGB such that the pump would not have sufficient clearance if mounted where its predecessors were.

Have you bench tested the pump? It may not need rebuilt.
 
Would the pump have required a bracket like the earlier cars? What part of the pump was in the boot? In other words what held the blasted thing in? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
I cannot remember specifically...I believe it only used the rubber retaining ring...take a look in the Moss catalog and there may be an exploded diagram...other listers may be able to chime in here as well.
 
Pump rebuilding isn't hard....points like a distributor...biggest thing is "timing" the diaphragm (& getting the correct one).

There's a hole through the trunk...it goes in the hole & has a black square cover that protects the end that's in the trunk....you can get the clamp that goes around it out of catalogs but you ccan't get the cover except used.

Agreed that the pump goes through a hole in the boot. Remember that there is a rubber grommet around the pump, and mine has a radiator type clamp around the grommet. The white fuel pump wire goes to the top of the pump, as does a diode protected (if that is the right word) wire to ground (ie., to the screw holding the black box to the back of the boot bulkhead).

Also, you'll want to check the rubber hoses from the fuel tank to the pump, and from the pump to the fuel line running under the car. These are notorious for being rotted.

Nope! Whether it is a diode or a capacitor in the points type pump it is there to protect the points from erosion due to sever arcing in the absence of those components.--Keoke
 
Mr. Dubois is too humble to mention it himself so I'll do it for him. He is the guru of SU fuel pumps and offers a rebuilding service. He's done my GT pump twice. First time when it needed it and the second time after I flooded it with water and drove it like that for a year.
 
Well shucks Mr. Dave DuBois say something in your sig if you are providing a service folks can use. At least a business web site link. I know we on the fourm would appreciate. In fact speek with Basil. Golly only knows LBC fixit guys are loved here.
 
Jack - I don't advertize because mine is a retirement hobby business and I already have more work than I really wanted. I will consider a link to a general SU fuel pump write up that I did (it is somewhat misleading in that it is on someone else's web site). There are several other people who also repair SU fuel pumps, although none of them do the solid state modification that I do. I am also talking to someone who may take up the hobby and also do solid state mods. Cheers,
