SU fuel pump question

Use a THIN film of Hylomar on those fibre washers. Do NOT be tempted to just overtighten 'em... they'll split at the threaded area if overtorqued. The diaphragm can be sealed around the edge the same way if it isn't deteriorated from exposure to chemicals or age cracked.

It's a Permatex product, ya gotta hunt for it, tho. I seem to recall ACE Hardware and/or Harbor Freight may have it. It was a proprietary Rolls goo Permatex got the permission to produce/sell but it ain't common nor "cheap".

Ask at the local NAPA store or any "chain" outfit. They may be able to get it for ya. Stuff is absolutely impervious to any petrochem. Lacquer thinner is about the only thing I found to 'cut' it.

Permatex "Right Stuff" may be an acceptable substitute, too.

Think: "Joe Curto" for the SU rebuilds, Ex. He's one of the ONLY folk to trust if you don't do it yourself. One other is Hap Waldrop. Over in th' Spridget forum.

...just offerin' suggestions.

FWIW, so does Dave DuBois. Just sent him my 40+ yr old pump to have updated to optical trigger. He did a rebuild for me in 03 to magnetic trigger; now thinks optical much more reliable. I like the quality, price, and that he sent along the pressure/flow test results.

:iagree:

Recently (in the last six months) I replaced a V12 E-type client's dead pump with a dual-sided SU. If the "dead" one hadn't been one of the plastic New Zealand jobs it'd have gone to David D. for a refurb/upgrade.

No need, I'm just the messenger:
"Brosky" in the Triumph forum is the lad to thank.

Doc,
been on the phone checking. no luck. Harbor has it online only, but they want $9.00 to ups a $4.00 tube of dear Hylomar.

"Can you put it in a padded envelope and send it first class mail?" "No sir, we cannot DO THAT!" "Thank you! bah bye".

Camping World, Truck Stops, John Deere, all listed as having it, none have it.

Tomorrow I am checking local Mercedes Benz and Porsche dealers, someone says they always have it in the parts Dept.

We here at Chaos & Mayhem PTY., LTD. are always pleased to be of assistance!
:jester:

Where'd ya have to go to find it? Porsche shops usually have their own sealants. They're quite good... but they're expen$ive.

Re: SU fuel pump leak

a local CarQuest. They keep it in stock. One tube is plenty.

Porsche and Mercedes shops, you guessed it, "never heird of that".

here's what I asked CarQuest on the phone:

Q: 'hi, do you have any Permatex 85249?' (pause of silence)

A: 'Permatex Hylomar, I have 4 in stock sweetie'.

'thanks, I'll come by later'.
'you're welcome sweetie'.
:nopity:

Re: SU fuel pump leak

Good!

One tube is a "lifetime supply" if ya don't do an engine rebuild a month.

A ~thin film~ of th' stuff is ALL ya want.
