SU Fuel Pump Mounting

Hello I have a BJ8 Phase II. The car had an aftermarket fuel pump from New Zealand that finally gave out. It was made of plastic and was just hanging on the metal fuel lines. It was not mounted to the pump bracket. I just bought a genuine S.U. pump (made by Burlen apparently) from Moss Motors.

My question is around the mounting bolts. I have a couple of old Whitworth thread bolts of the right diameter, but they go in only about a turn and then stop. I have visited Home Depot and Napa and looked at all kinds of bolts, but nothing fits. Does anybody know exactly what bolts and threads per inch are required for this pump? The model is AZX-1307.

It looks like Moss does not list these mounting bolts as a part number that can be purchased.

All the SU pumps I've seen--and I have at least a half-dozen--were mounted with studs (it's much easier to start a nut than a bolt). Yeah, the thread is weird, not SAE and I don't think they're Whiworth, but SU Burlen indicates that's what's used:

What I do is tap the holes with an SAE bottoming tap--5/16" I think--and install an off-the-shelf SAE stud with some JB Weld to fill the threads. If you can get studs with coarse threads you won't spend 10 minutes securing the nuts on the side of the road when you have to swap a pump.

Or, you can call BCS or Tom's Import, etc., and see if they have some of the right-size studs

Thanks Bob for this quick reply. It makes a lot of sense that it uses studs. I just didn't have the original parts as a reference. As I think about it, these studs could be very similar to the ones that mount the carbs to the manifold, which seem to have a bit of taper to them. As you say, it makes those roadside tech sessions to swap out a pump a lot easier.

I'm not familiar with BCS -- what does that stand for?

In any event this reply is very helpful -- I was barking up the wrong tree!

Moss doesn't sell the stud, but they offer a bolt with the correct threads. If you look under fuel pump mounts, they show the stud as part #9 (stud pump to bracket) and the bolt alternative as part #10 (bolt - alternative to stud part 320-360). I used the bolts to mount the SU fuel pump on my BT7. A spacer was required so that the pump cleared the mount. The BT7 uses a different mount than your car, so the spacer may not be necessary.

Thanks Rob and Joe for these latest updates. Now I see it in the Moss Catalog as Part #10 but I went ahead and ordered them over the phone with John at British Car Specialists. A good learning experience for me. This should take care of it. Thanks to all for the advice.
