Anyone know of a kit to convert an SU point pump to an electronic one? I have a couple of old SU pumps that I'm going to rebuild, but if a kit is out there, I'll convert them to electronic. PJ

~SOMEONE~ here on the forum has posted this info... can't recall but sure it'll show up.

It was Dave DuBois!

HI Paul, why not just buy a new electronic pump you will be $$$$ ahead. Converting an old pump will leave you with a converted "old pump". Fix up one of the old pumps as a spare---Fwiw--Keoke

"Fix up one of the old pumps as a spare" - A person would be better off replacing the points in the old pump and putting the new, all electronic one in the trunk as a spare. I can almost garantee that if you put a points style pump in hte trunk as the spare, it will not work when you need it. The contacts on the points film over with time and if the pump is not used regularly to burn off the film, the contacts will soon be insulated from each other by the film and the pump won't run. this is why people who drive their cars regularly, don't have the problem with the older, points style fuel pumps while those who only drive their car once a year complain about the lousy SU fuel pumps.

As for having a "converted old pump", If the old pump is gone through and the diaphragm is replaced along with putting the conversion in, it will function as well and as long as a new pump. I have a friend with a pump that I restored and converted to solid state (my own circuit rather than the one BFS sells)some 30 years ago and it is still going strong. I am still an advocate of installing a permanently installed back up pump using one of the Facet or other such electronic pumps and powering both pumps through a switch. See my article at: https://www.custompistols.com/cars/dave/BackUpFuelPump.htm
Cheers,

Thanks for the info Dave, Doc. I already have a new point style SU pump on the car and a mini aux. pump in the system. I think you gave me that idea Dave. I'm going to rebuild a couple of old pumps as a winter, (Inside where it's warm!)project. They will only be spares. I do this kind of thing when I get bored. I enjoy it and accomplish something to boot. PJ

Well, I just did a lot of checking on price and shipping charges and found out that if I buy a conversion kit from Burlen in the UK @ $78.60 US and a rebuild kit @ $69.95 from V.B., with shipping on both items, the cost of rebuilding my old pump will be $191.28. A new pump from Moss is $159.95 and shipping to me is $19.95. Now the way I add things up is, A new pump from Moss is $179.90. Deduct that from $191.28 and $11.38 pops up! I think I'll scrap the idea, buy a new one if I need it, take the $11,38 and go buy lunch somewhere. PJ
