SU carbs spitting fuel, cause? [race car]

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

Oh my god, enough parts there to sell and have Hap build you a good strong 1275.

Accepting offers on parts and the two engines

We're moving in a month so I've mostly got things packed away. Hopefully after the move I'll have time to get back to working on the car and also have the time to actually make some for sale ads etc.

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

First off, when time presents its self you need a complete list of goodies that have to go.

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

Well, I took a gamble on a local (73?) Midget with a 1275. $600 delivered to my garage. Hopefully I can transplant the motor to the bugeye and get it running. Was not able to get the midget to turn over before I bought it, starter is bad and clutch is shot/gone so we couldn't turn it by pushing either.

good haul - should get you started

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

Great score! I'd think you could maybe send Hap the 1275 for a going over and pay him off with the two race engines, part out the '73 (which makes me sad) or sell it whole and you'd be in the black easily, or something. Someone put wire wheels on the '73, that hardware (hubs and such, wheels look ratty) can be of value, no? I love wires, I'd put wires on a BE, of course, I'd probably put the BE bonnet on the '73!

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

While crawling around under the cars today I noticed some key differences between the racing bugeye and its later MG counterpart. As the bugeye was my first LBC I didn't realize how many things on this car were custom because I did not have anything to get intimate with to compare it to.

See how many differences you can spot from a stock bugeye and I'll post my observations at the bottom. I'm sure I haven't caught everything that has been changed yet.

Things I have observed:

- Stainless steel oil/brake/clutch/fuel lines
- Oil Cooler, AN fittings fitted to motor for oil lines, oversized K/N HP filter
- Front / Rear Sway bars
- Torsion (I think it is called?) bar in the rear pivoting on the differential
- custom leaf springs to allow wider tires
- dual redundant fuel pumps (switches for each up front along with a fuel pressure gauge.) can use either or, or both pumps at one time.
- Disc brakes up front
- access hole cut in undercarrage to get to the front U joint
- grease nipple on front U joint?
- Ribcase transmission (not stock to a bugeye is it?)
- OK, so I have more ribcase transmissions

Did I miss anything?

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

Vroom! 1275 runs but desperately needs a tuneup. Everything is in the car, hooked up, and topped off. Drove the car 6 inches in my garage  Oil pressure is good, compression is really not so good cyl 3 only holds 60psi, the other 3 hold 125-145. Will drive it for now and investigate later, maybe a ring/valve will free up since it hadn't been run in untold years when I did the compression test.

Its after 2am now, so more info later. Getting up in less than 4 hours to tune up the car and take it for a drive. If all goes well I'll attempt the drive to the British car show (hence the push to get this project done in 3 days).

My neighbors are going to hate me in the morning if they don't already from the little running I did tonight...

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

Well, got back to working on the car today. Things are tuned up decently but still more to do. Took it around the block a couple times just before the rain hit. The 1275 feels (and probably is) significantly slower than a 948... But I will say that being able to take a corner at a normal speed in 2nd gear without bogging the engine is rather nice.

Looks like the gamble on the MG was a good one. Knock on wood.

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

"grease nipple on front U joint?"

This was stock from day one.

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

I may be interested in some of the SFD race parts. I've got another SFD bugeye of about the same era that I'm restoring for vintage racing. I'll contact you by PM.

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

The thing on the back of the differential is a Watts Linkage. It allows up and down movement of the suspension, but limits the side to side movement.

Re: SU carbs spitting fuel, cause?

I thought that was the joy of 1/4 quarter eplic rear springs, they would not go side to side.
