SU AUF 305 fuel pump behaviour[s]

I have this pump on my Bugeye, I know its not OE but it was presumably installed when the 1275 was put in. There are three behaviours of this pump that I am reasonably familiar with:

1. It ticks maybe 6 to 8 times and stops when I turn on the ignition. This is comforting and nice, the way we like our British Cars to sound.

2. It presumably ticks occasionally but drowned out while the engine is running, ensuring that the carb floats stay where they should be.

3. Occasionally it stalls, needing a swift tap with a hard object. The last time it did this I was picking my wife up at the airport, not a very good time for that to happen.

Today I encountered a fourth mode that worries me. It doesn't tick at the normal speed, it veritably buzzes, as if the armature is operating in and out at 10x normal speed. Has anyone had this experience? Is it normal? I have over 1/2 a tank of gas in there at the moment. Fuel still seems to be getting through as I can drive, although the filter (plastic semi-seethrough type) seems empty, I assume its body should be full of fuel. However when I stopped after picking my 16-year-old up from school, about 5 miles later, the buzz had gone away.

I am starting to wonder if this pump is starving the engine for fuel, this might account for the sluggishness I am having.

By the way I have found a source for the Facet fuel pump at a way lower price than Moss is selling them for, like $41.99 instead of $79.95, see https://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Browse/tf-Browse/s-10101/N-111+10201+600002064/c-10101
