Stupid 1622 eng. question

A while back I bought an engine for my A coupe. When it arrived I gave it a quick once-over and shelved it. Then I started checking it over closer and its stamped 1622 on the side but the riveted on eng. number tag is unreadable. Any ideas?? Plus I probaly won't use the thing now as I'm going with a B 1800 with o/d. Its complete and clean and I may be able to fire it up, or at least do a complete comp. check.

If it has a tach drive its a MGA Mk2. Also the head(originally) will have a "16" cast into it at the back. Non MGA 1622's had a "15" cast head and no tach drive unless its from something like a Riley. There were some later 1622's with no tach drive that used a 5 main oil pump from what i recall. MGA mk2 engine numbers started with 16GC. Bob

There were never any 1622s that used a 5 main oil pump - very different parts.

There were no 1622s installed in Rileys. The only other uses I can think about that would have had a tach drive were Elva and TVR. The Austin A60 Cambridge was a good source of spares for the 1622 - you could even drill out the hole for the tach drive and (as long as you used a cam with the tach gear on it) run a tach off it.

The '16' and '18' heads are identical except for that number cast on them - both have the same chamber volume and valve sizes.

Appreciate the info. I just want to post the correct info when I finally list all this stuff on evilbay....
