LOL, just went out and looked. Miss Agatha has em as well. Look just like yours.

Guess we have a new secret.

Come on guys step right up to this one.

I asked this same question in 2006. I was told by a couple of list Gurus that they were "Not Stock" Others reported that they had the same thing, Nobody came up with a definitive answer.

To hold the Lake Pipes on the side when you put a V-8 in it.

My car has them. I wonder if they were used to line up the panels at assembly?

Be's had no seat belts or mounts.

Mine have them too. I'll put lockwashers and nuts on them and torque to 20 ft. lbs. as the manual says to do.

Jack - "Seat belts were available from BMC Services Ltd. as an accessory. Attachment points have been incorporated the body construction.", according to my Mk I sprite Shop Manual (Issue 4, #50312) in the General Information section. There is no date associated with this manual that I can find, however, the picture on the frontispiece shows an early model with the nine studs at the top of the windscreen.

I like the last sentence on the page.

The Phrog has them as well. I'm still not sure how they might relate to seat belts.

Mine also has them. I privately queried this to the most knowledgeable in the last year and didn't come up with an answer either.

I can't see how these would be intended for seat belts. Also, retrofit seat belt anchors were in the side of the tunnel and inner rocker, not floors. Floor anchors are easier to install, but not as strong.

See BMC data for retrofitting seat belts:

Never saw seat belts in an early BE except for those of us that raced or drove on military bases.

However, not arguing, just commenting.

Well, the question is still not answered, but I heard back from someone who should know. Here's what he had to say about these:

"They were never mentioned or shown in any "factory" training or materials I had,
And I went to Gayden to watch the tub construction using the original Swindon tooling. The fixtures/jigs gripped the parts using the basic shapes, never by threaded studs (which would be terribly time consuming in a production line).

That makes me think the only process remaining would be brackets for securing during shipment. Maybe from Swindon to Abingdon, or just aboard ship...? "
