T-Series Stuck speedometer cable on TC

Hey All,
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get a 62 year
old speedo cable loosened from the transmission fitting
on a 1947 MG TC ? I need to replace it and have tried
vice grips on the screw on collar to the tranny and it
will not budge. Any ideas ?

Soak it with a good rust penetrating fluid. If that doesn't help then you might need to carefully apply heat, the expansion between it and the housing should break it free. Be careful using vise grips and other pliers that put a lot of pressure on it, the speedo pinion housing os brass and you risk deforming it.
 
Mike- After unscrewing the cable from the speedometer housing, hold the cable assembly up as high as you can. You'll need to thread the end of the cable through the bulkhead. Pour ATF down into the fitting that was attached to the speedometer. The cable housing will eventually fill up. Let it sit for a day or two. This should resolve your problem. Drain the speedo cable. The speedometer and tach cables almost never get any proper lubrication. Once every other year, remove the outer sheath of the cable. You'll see if you inspect the fitting closely that the ends are held on with a clip. Release the clip, remove the fitting, pull the inside cable out and grease the cable liberally. Replace the inner cable into the outer sheath and refit the threaded coupler. That should keep any future problems from occurring with the cables.
