Stuck oil seal collar

I'm trying to remove an oil seal collar from a front hub, so that I can replace the oil seal and check the inner bearing. Trouble is that it's stuck, or at least very stubborn. Is there a clever way to pop it out? It's hard to get leverage on it, and I don't want to scratch the metal, as it can't be good to have rubber against that.

I'm confuzzled. The photo is of the axle and collar/ring the inner seal rides on...

If you're trying to remove the inner seal, a couple of stout screwdrivers will do the job: One tangent to the opening of the seal resting at two points of the hub "lip" and the other over it at 90* as a lever to prise the seal out of the bore. The seal is toast after removal in almost any case, even with a "proper" seal removal tool.

I think I see what you're prescribing, Doc, and will give it a try.

The photo is just to show off the rebuild I'm doing on the front end of my MG. I know it's not an oil seal.

Actually, reading it over a few more times, I should clarify that I'm having difficulty removing the oil seal collar...the metal bit that holds the rubber seal in. I have a new seal, and don't mind tearing the old one up.

Stop scarin' me then! :jester:

"metal collar" ?!?!

Gimme a photo of THAT.

The seal is made with a metal collar, neoprene, or some new high tech material, and a metal compression spring all in one unit! Pull it out, throw it away! Buy a new one! Or, wait until you have a new one and then throw the old one away. You can not reuse them! As Doc says, the seal is toast after removing. They are one of the cheapest things you can buy for the car.
