stuck in reverse!

went outside to go to town and my midget is stuck in reverse and the shifter moves but does nothing.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif
looks like ill be pulling the motor again.......zimmmy
 
Yes it sounds like you'll have to take the engine out, but before you do, have you checked that it isn't anything simple, like damage to the end of the gearstick, or anything you can reach from inside the car, though it does sound like it's jumped a selector, but I'd want to be sure it wasn't a simple thing beofre I started getting the engine out!
 
You car is one of the last to have the 1275 engine and ribcage trans. This trans has a side plate tha can be removed to inspect the forks, which have probably slipped in position. I've seen someone "unstick" one of these tranmission while it was in the car, but there is very little room to work and it was a devil of a job. It is probably easier to remove the engine and trans.
 
That happened to my midget. Pull the shift knob/boot. The retainer cup for the spring may have popped out of position.

You have the 1500 trans (like me).
Zimmy's ribcage trans is much different and the problem is more likely inside the trans (but I guess you're right...it can't hurt to look)
(I had the same problem in my 1500 trans as you a few years ago).
