Well, it depends on what's keeping it stuck there...

I "suspect" that it is the third gear synchromesh ring has worn to the point of allowing the 3rd-4th synchro hub to travel too far in the direction of 4th gear and that let the captive detent balls & springs (three each) loose. Now with the springs sticking out of the hub and blocking the path, it can't get back to neutral (or 3rd).

Just a hunch, but ask me how I know...

I suspect Randy is right, and I know for the same reason he does. One way to check is to drain the fluid and look for the detent balls at the bottom of the oil pan. Was the gearbox recently rebuilt?

Have to check with my mechanic but I hope so on a $2500 rebuild. Hopefully he will back what he did and it won't cost me my other leg.

I have just put the transmission back in my car after the same thing happened to my wife. I knew that the synchro was going bad because shifting into 3rd required delicacy & patience. I replaced all synchro rings and the sliding hub for 3rd & 4th and it now shifts very nicely as can be told by the big smile on my face. Nothing else in my gearbox looked even remotely worn. Is it possible that the hub was not replaced during rebuild?

There is some difference of opinion about replacement synchro rings. Some vendors claim that there is one brand of replacement ring that doesn't last long enough to be worth the installation.

These vendors claim that there is a much better & longer lasting ring available. Several who are selling "good" rings are British Car Specialists - USA, Just Brits - USA, & Denis Welch - UK.
