Is there a chemical that will loosen up the dried up gas varnish that seems to have welded the float to the bottom of the bowl ?

Plastic or metal float?
In the shops, I used spray carb cleaner if metal floats.
Spray some in and let it sit for a while.

If you can, try to find the "chlorinated" carb cleaner (contains methylene chloride). It's apparently now illegal here but perhaps you can still get it up there.

Brake parts cleaner, or some lacquer thinner.
