the air valve piston rod in my 66 tr4a's stromberg binds with the cover, it goes down almost all the way but not quite, the other carb slaps down with a click on the body. it's not the needle. with both out of the body it still binds a little when i slide it up and down. i have cleaned them and put in new kits. this carb was coated in black when i got the car making me think it had a bad day and caught fire. do i use emory cloth on the rod and inside the cover or?

Usually, the internals of SUs and Strombergs are supposed to have been matched sets, so that the pistons are NOT supposed to be interchanged. HOWEVER, there's always the chance that someone, some time ago, did just that. You might try simply switching pistons between the two carbs and see if that eliminates the problem (and doesn't cause any new ones).

I would certainly disassemble it and look for the tight spot first. Does it still bind with the top cover & piston off of the main body ? If not, then the problem isn't the rod sliding in the top cover.

ISTR the book warns that the piston & cover are a matched set and should not be interchanged ... any chance yours have gotten swapped ? Might be worth a try anyway.

Yes it still binds with the piston and cover off the body. I did trying switching them with worse results.

Hmmm, I still wouldn't use emery on the rod. It's supposed to be very polished, I doubt you could duplicate that finish. Have you looked inside the cover to see where the tight spot is ? It's relatively soft & doesn't have to be polished, so that is where I would try to relieve the tight spot. (Of course the best solution would be a new dome & piston.)

Stupid question, does it still bind with the damper piston removed ?

As a follow up a 28 guage shotgun cleaning wire brush inside the dome cleared up the sticky problem with the piston. It is free, so am I and I am driving. yea
