Stromberg 150 cd vs. cds vs. cdse

ok, so over the years of gt6's (and all cars with strombergs i'm sure), they changed the carbs several times and i was wondering if there was any real benifit to getting an earlier carb for increased tuning ability.

i've heard that the cdse carbs have less options to tune the carb (to help emmisions), but i've never seen anything but a cdse so i don't really know what i'm missing.

The later ones have all sort of extra stuff added to them mostly to control them when they are cold. Stromberg's aren't really the most tunable carbs in any case. Mostly because there isn't the same range of needles available for them as for the SU's.
The real "advantage" of the earlier units is that they are somewhat simpler.

I believe these are the main differences:

CD: Uses a machined bar for cold start that restricts air and lifts the main piston when choked.

CDS: Uses a separate metering needle for cold starts instead of the bar.

CDSE: Same as CDS, but adds a temperature compensator, throttle bypass valve, idle trimming screw, and a leak balancing screw.

Not a separate metering needle, but an assembly called a "starting box" that's a simple setup of a plate with different-sized holes in it. It works well, as well as you need for a choke, compact, simple.

The only carb I can think of off the top of my head which used a separate needle were the SU's with the auxilliary electric starting carburetor.

Except for the needle originally supplied, the CDSE's additional emissions stuff pretty much only affects tuning & operation when cold & at idle (remember, these were early emissions regs they had to meet).

The CDS & CDSE setups are easier for choke connection & operation. The CDS & CD adjust mixture via an assembly at the bottom of the carb; the CDSE via a tool inserted through the top of the dashpot.

Not really enough la difference between the three to vive at.
