I have enjoyed the clean no stripe look for a few years now and find myself now missing the old stripes.
I am still glad I didn't have the stripes painted on.
I have toyed with a variety of styles but darn, I like the old ones still.
Vinyl stripes.
My question: How difficult is removal? Damage to underlying paint? The paint job is like a freaking mirror
and I don't want to limit my future option to go back to no stripe.
The stripes with the black spoke wheels. I want it...but I don't want to ruin a paint job in the process.
Tips, hints welcomed.

We had our boat restriped at local Stripe Shop place. Vinyl with some kind of water based sealant was applied IIRC, just like window film, no sticky adhesives like you are thinking of. That's the plan I'm working on for Bugsy II. Removal via a Heat Gun, add a little heat and it peels off. At least I think that's the way it was done. Brain has issues some days.

Sun would eventually leave a mark in paint but as nice as your car is chances are it sits inside most of the time anyway.

I am going to check a local shop out soon as I can.
Yep, it is a garage queen. Inside and under custom cover.
Sees the road on excellent days and just for sprints in the mountain twisties.

I hear ya! The guy took forever but he did it old school. Sanding every coat. Even the clear coats.
A major reason for the paint job was the old painted stripes were cracking. While we were at it he
cut a tiny bit of cancer out and properly welded in repairs. Surface rust on the passenger A pillar
and a bit deeper on one rear fender edge. Cut it out....I don't care if it wasn't a hole, it was cancer.
Otherwise the car is solid, even the battery tray is great .
I hate to go there but....dang it I do like the stripes.
The stripes just fit the nature of my Sprite. IMHO.
 
I agree with you David and if I have my way with Bugsy II White with twin Red Stripes and Minilites. Red Interior, Red Dash

The owner of the company that I work for had his Suburban entirely wrapped with vinyl. When he realized it was wasn't drumming up any additional business, he decided to have it removed. The paint underneath was completely pristine and none the worse for wear for being covered in vinyl for at least 3 or 4 years. In fact, the paint was probably in better shape because it was protected by the vinyl. It's a far cry from the moisture trapping and rust creating vinyl tops of the 60s and 70s.
 
Guys are paint their cars with plasti-dip and you can peel it right off when you get tired of it. They are mainly doing the satin "Batman black" look but are still able to go back to how it was before with no ill effects. Google it.
