Strange trans noise

So I have only had my rib case rebuild done for maybe 30 miles, and it made a couple strange noises today. It was when shifting into second from first if I recall, a whining sort of noise, then it went away. And away it went for the rest of the drive with one exception when I was almost home.
Now, not knowing transmissions, I have no idea what could make that noise. I thought syncronizer, but can they make a whine?
I'm pretty well done with this trans. Either I find a Datsun trans for cheap and swap it, or I may just kill the car with a big gun.

I have had that happen a few times as well. I think it may be a detent allowing the gears to just touch.

Missing detent(s)???? Might be the outside of the 1/2 shift fork rubbing second gear face. Synchronizers usually don't whine. When the synchro/cone arrangement wears significantly, the gears will be rough on engagement and may scrape or grind as they engage. The gearboxes have a number of interlock plungers and detents to keep the other non-selected gears/forks/rails in the right place. If these detents, balls, pills or whatever you want to call them are not installed/lost/forgotten, things tend to move around where they were not suppossed to be. Worn shift forks often touch the gears and create that shiny gold color to the drained oil.

There is a 210 5 speed on eBay right now. No bids yet but starting at $300.

Thanks Mike.

I saw that trans, but I will wait out a wrecking yard one for $100. I guess I will keep driving the car and see if anything fails.

$300.00 is a great price for a F* Datsun tranny IMHO.
If you get a kit from BillM, you'll still spend less that a $100 trans and a R'gate kit
Just sayin
Phil

True, but if you are broke, you hold out for the cheapest thing possible
