Strange noise

Hey fellas,
I went for a ride today and heard a strange noise that seems to emminate from my distributor. My 73 TR6 has a new distributor cap, rotor, points and condensor, all OE type.
The noise is a high-pitched, soft, continuous clicking or buzzing sound. Took the cap off, jiggled everything around a bit and the sound went away, for about 10 minutes. Recently switched to 7mm low resistance plug wires to get a better burn, but I think the sound has been going on for a few trips now, even before the new wires. No unusual wear patterns evident inside the cap. Is there some kind of lubricant needed inside the distributor that I am not aware of? Never heard this before in three years. Also, the distributor is fairly new rebuild. What gives?

I always lightly lube the cam (that the points ride against). I just use a bit of assembly lube though there are products purpose-made for this. That spot can run dry and cause excessive wear, especially with the modern red plastic points set.

On some distributors you also pull the points and add a drop of oil on that center screw (or felt pad if it is still in there).

No idea whether either of these lubes will take care of your noise.

Bill, I hope you did the little shims thing under the distributor, you can put a couple to many on and get away with it but not one to little as the gears will mesh into the ones on the cam instead of floating. OR--- it could be simple and you need a new tach cable. Disconnect the tach cable and see if you still get the noise. Wayne
