Strange Computer Issue

PS - I just tried your two DNS numbers in my own setup. It turned my web searches into sludge. Like using dialup to load a single page.

Reverted to my original DNS numbers and all is back to normal.

I *think* it's the DNS numbers you're using ....

THIS is why I HATE computers! :hammer:

"Intuitive" controls and commands my fanny!

They're suckin' the life outa us, I tell ya!

Mickey - I know you're too young to remember this , but back in the Dark Ages I watched Carol Burnett. Her character Mrs. Wiggins was a secretary, who needed a little help with technology. One of my favorite lines, as she was staring at her typewriter: "Now let's see ... where is the S key ...?"

Plus ca change.

Tom
PS - ever see this video about IT support in days past?

Oh, yeah - I remember Carol Burnett from the early "Garry Moore Show"! Along with Durward Kirby. And Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca; Pinkie Lee; Uncle Miltie - all that.

And I loved the middle ages IT thing. Can definitely relate!

I AM a Luddite!!

Mediacom says they're correct.

Did they have any idea why your service is so bad now?

Just FYI - I use 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 for DNS.

I'll usually use one of those as a secondary when people are having this problem.

Sometimes "foreign" networks will fail to assign, or will assign lousy DNS server addresses to a machine... stick 'em in <span style="font-style: italic">manually</span> Tony - you do <span style="font-style: italic">not</span> need to use your ISP's DNS servers. Sometimes using others are better and updated faster.

Scott - if you get a chance - see what happens if you temporarily change to Tony's "correct" DNS service. I tried them and my browser turned to sludge.

I also tried tracing them, and got stuck with timeouts after about a dozen steps from here (Connecticut).

My service on my desktop computer is "BANG" fast! USING THOSE SAME DNS SERVERS!

204.127.203.135
216.148.225.135

How do I change them?

Maybe I just need to take it to a compter repair & have them dump IE & reload!

Not yet! OK - let's clear your DNS cache from the garbage it probably accumulated during the trip.

Go back into the Command CMD window, and type:

ipconfig /flushdns <enter>

Then restart the machine. Give it a browser run again.

Have I missed all th' fun?

Try the ipconfig command Tom suggests, Tony. It ~should~ toss out any 'residual' settings. Then do <span style="font-weight: bold">ipconfig /renew</span> to reestablish.

I just said <span style="font-style: italic">"to ---- with it"</span> & took it to a small shop nearby & told them to figure it out!

I'm just going to let the experts solve it!

This has been a terrible Monday....the company that mixes paint for my body shop mixed Damask Red instead of Tartan Red because they said the name had changed & the guy painting my parts had the underside of the trunk & hood along with all the loose pieces painted before his boss stopped him (duh, he couldn't remember how bright my red was when it came in?)....they got the correct Tartan Red today & they got all the Damask off & those parts ready to repaint...they're painting tonight so tomorrow I should be able to see it without its clear coats today.

VA sent me a specially made pair of shoes that are supposed to help my peripheral neuropathy problems & I'm only supposed to wear them but they're killing me! If I tie them, my feet feel like they're about to come off & my toes feel like they're freezing; if I don't, they flop around & hurt my heels....& gotta wear them until the 24th when I go back to have them checked & a brown pair made (these are black).

And the ---- computer won't do what its supposed to!

Plus, I had to write my annual check to the IRS today!

Tony - this really interests me, as your other computer worked fine on those DNS numbers.

If possible, please post what the computer shop tells you about what they found wrong. It'll help folks in the future.

Thanks.

Re: Strange Computer Issue - UPDATE

Well, while in Honduras, I picked up a virus HEAT (I think that's what he said it was) that's buried itself in my operating system & is playing havoc with my browser...he said in some ways its like a spybot....everytime they try to reload my browser or FIREFOX as an alternative browser, it jumps out & plays with the newly loaded browser, whichever.

They said they've had several computers in with the same problem...so, we're gonna relaod everything from scratch...we're saving all my documents, photos, etc. & ensuring they're free of virus...should have everything on the laptop redone & up by tomorrow.

Re: Strange Computer Issue - UPDATE

Got none of that....did update my video stuff though...that might've been it!

So, it wasn't necessarily the system in the hotels in Honduras or PR?

Don't you love technology? :jester:

Re: Strange Computer Issue - UPDATE

Yikes - never even heard of Heat virus.

Tony - what antivirus program do you use? And if the laptop was only used for web browsing and email ... how the heck did it get a virus in Honduras?

Hmmm - laptop, Tinster, powder coating, heat ...

nah.

Thanks.

I use Kaspersky - pretty good program...best I can remember, I was trying to see the photos & Utub videos here on the BCF & couldn't see them (remember, I made a post about that)...so, in the bottom right corner a little banner popped up that there was an upgrade to ActiveX...after I told it to upgrade, I could see the Utube videos but almost right aweay lost aboility to do anything!

Funny thing about it is: my laptop still grabs my email whenever its online...a moment ago, I was at the computer shop & they were showing me something & it grabbed all today's emails off my server...now I can't work any of them! So, they're gonna do everything offline or build another user on my laptop for when they go online so it doesn't think its me & get my mail!

Don't know, Mickey...if you remember, it only started there in the Hotel Grand Sula when I tried to hook into their wireless network...probably had nothing to do with them other than, if you remember, we thought it might've been my security system conflicting with theirs so I turned mine off to check thinking they had protection - guess they didn't!
