Strange Clicky/Tappy Sound

Hello to all -

My TR-6 just started making a clicky/tappy (please excuse the adjectives to describe sound) sound. It sounds like it's coming from under the valve cover. In general the car runs great - never any motor issues. The motor was always a tiny bit on the noisy side, however, never to any extent that would raise any red flags. Could this be something simple like a needed valve adjustment? My mechanic will be checking it out hopefully tomorrow. I'm praying to the Triumph Gods that it's not anything really serious.

Any advice and feedback is greatly appreciated.

Dave

For a start, I think you're on the right track. Remove the Valve Cover, see what that reveals, then check the valve lash.
If nothing simple sticks out as the source of the noise..then..never mind, cross that bridge if you get to it.

First thing I would do is check the oil level. Then , off with the valve cover for inspection to see if anything looks out of the ordinary. As PB mentions, next step would be to adjust the valve lash. After that....

Cheers,
M. Pied Lourd

Oil level is good. And I also replaced the plugs, points, condenser, rotor and cap. Please excuse my not knowing this but what exactly is the valve lash?

Dave

Valve lash is another way of saying valve clearance. Checking/setting this is a simple task -- possibly time consuming the first time as you acquaint yourself with the routine, but well within the abilities of a novice mechanic.

Many thanks to all for your advice and insight. Thankfully the shop I trust my car to is run by extremely knowledgeable and honest people. They've been taking care of my Triumph for 6 years now.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will be resolved quickly and without the outlay of many greenbacks.
