So the pastor and I took the youth group to an event called "iMatter fest" last night. Its a Faith based event to bring awareness to teen suicide. There were probably 10 Christian heavy metal bands and a really good speaker that performed. the kids loved it, I really had a good time too, but I just don't get into that kind of music. The first band we heard was a group called "August Burns Red". Very talented group of musicians, but, Call me old fashioned, but I like to at least kind of understand the lyrics. These were all "screamer" bands. the singers were just yelling at the top of their lungs.
Whoa! Check this out! make sure to turn your speakers DOWN a bit! I gotta admit the drummer impresses me even if I don't care to much for the music.
They put on an excellent show, and there were a ton of people there.

Yeah, well, I'm a big Beatles fan, but I'm still trying to figure out "Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye." Or "I am the egg man goo goo goo joob!" Oh sure, I understand what they are saying - I just don't understand WHAT they are saying!

After the first group did that kind of song, they all sound exactly the same. Why not make a song that will be remembered?

I joked to one of the kids that went with us that they could announce a different title before every song, then play the exact same thing over again and I wouldn't know the difference. They all sounded the same to me. I was waiting for the lead singer to have a stroke.
Love that song Basil.... Don't understand what it means either, but nor do I understand "The Jabberwokkie" And I love that poem as well. Perfectly clear nonsense.

When I lived in the French Quarter above Checkpoint Charlie's there was a band that played the secular equivialant EVERY night. Try to sleep through that !!!!

I don't get this or rap either but, if it helps reach troubled kids and shows them a better way I'm all for it.

First thing you gotta do is speak thier language....even if it's incomprehensible ...

(which is why I sound like a middle school kid most of the time.)

and it was time tonight again.

Getting back on point...

As a clergy person, and having done my time as camp counselor, my concern is what long-term messages are given and received, and especially retained, by these events. There are tons of them around the country, and I'm not sure the intended message gets conveyed.

But then, I'm turning into my own father/grandfather! Sometimes I can't believe I'm saying the very things I scoffed at as a kid.

Still, as long as the message gets sent...

Here's the lyrics to the above mentioned video:

Convictions to the back burner.
Remembering what’s really important isn’t so important after all.
Gather all your possessions, and smile because you’ve got it all.
Still that empty feeling won’t go away.
Your puzzle’s missing one very essential piece,
and I know you’ll keep looking in all the wrong places until it’s too late.
Slip on the ice again.
When did you become so cold?
Living for the here and now never made so much sense.
You think you’ve got all the time in the world, but this could all be ending now.
How far down will you go before it’s too late?
Slipping on the ice again, you’ve become so cold.
Lucky for you rock bottom is in sight.
Your wake up call is set for now,
and the trail you have followed has come all the way to the end.
I just hope you survive the crash

PM coming back at ya!

Thanks Kellysguy. I knew the lyrics were decent, the overall message sent by the concert was very positive.
Skillet.. yea.. they're right along with these guys. good cause, not really my style.
I'm more in line with bands like Third Day, David Crowder Band, Newsboys, Big Daddy Weave, Selah..... And a ton more that I'm to brain dead to think of right now.

I like Skillet. (allot actually)

Ha, that's funny especially seeing that you're seven years younger than me.

( I would guess you're too young to be old fashioned, but I guess that's just me being wrong AGAIN! This growling style was becomming popular when you were in your early twenties IIRC.)

Then again, I was a bit of a Metal Head in the 80's so....

The funny thing is they look so preppy and clean cut.
