Stock exhaust manifold or headers?

I'm a long way off from finishing my '69 MGB, so have a lot of dreaming time. One of the current mental exercises is the choice between using the stock exhaust manifold on a Pacesetter/Monza system or going with a header.

Moss has a short header that looks good. My plan is to take everything down to the local muffler shop and have them put everything together.

Anyone care to join me in this mental exercise session?

The stock cast iron exhaust manifold is an excellent design which would be very difficult to beat. The only reason to replace it would be to save weight, or if a large bore was needed for a heavily-aspirated engine. An aftermarket unit would not fit as well and would allow more noise to escape.
 
I agree with Steve, the early CB manifold is hard to beat. Match it up with a Peco or Falcon pipe and your good to go.

Would you explain a little? What are the Peco or Falcon products that would be necessary? I am fairly new at this.

What John suggests is exactly what I'm running on two cars. On my '65 I have the stock manifold and downpipe, and from there I use a Peco system. That means everything is stock to the point where the exhaust curves towards the back of the car and from there it's a Peco unit. On my '67 it's the same thing only with a Falcon system instead of Peco.

Visit the Moss Motors web site and look up these parts:

459-035 Peco Exhaust
454-530 Stock Headpipe
373-830 Stock Manifold
 
Keep the stock cast iron manifold and downpipe. A Peco, which is the best exhaust sytem for performance on the market, will only give you 5 rear wheel horsepower at peek RPM. The stock exhaust system from 62-74.5 was VERY efficient from the factory. Spend $150 on something more important.
 
if thinking about buying headers from moss, please reconsider. if you take the time to search out other dealers, you might be able to save a hefty bundle. for example; the aluminum rocker arms and shaft by moss (the orange ones) are made by a company called harland sharp. they are a custom order type, but you can save in some cases up to $400 over moss's price. my advice to people looking for performance parts for their car is to first look at ALL of your options, and in the end, you will have saved enough to buy a few extra goodies. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif
 
I'm still working on my 75, but I believe it is an easy call on later model Bs. If I had a earlier flow through manifold, I would keep the cast iron. Having a later model 'lousy' restrictive exhaust manifold, I've opted to replace with a Peco header and exhaust.
 
it would be really nice if any of the headers or even the older manifolds had fittings for EGR valves...

I think i'm going to have to engineer my own manifolds to keep California emissions legalness...
