With a $15/hr minimum wage mandate nailed to the legislation.

There are those who are predicting that up to 40% of jobs existing today will be done by robots and chatbots in the next 8-10 years. Including office and call center work. That’s not to mention that unless someone needs to be physically present at a job site, you can be competing for work with people literally anywhere in the world due to modern communications capability. There are time when getting close to the end of the working roller coaster isn’t a bad thing. Wouldn’t want to be 25 again.
 
All the above THREADS are true. and the one about being 25 even more so. Our grandson is 4 years old what have we left him. As for the GOV money my first check was a down payment on a new car. the next was a new Frig. Being retired I have four incomes each month I did not need the money ( Sorry ) but other retired persons may need it. The Government can not make a call as who gets it Heck would raised if they picked winners and losers so we all lose. I did 40 years in the Trade Union My job could never be replaced so I recommend that if someone has ten years or more look to a job that would out live them. Madflyer
 
I feel fortunate that the IT job I chose over 40 years ago now is still valued in the marketplace. I know many I grew up and have grown older with for whom the need for the skills they had disappeared 20 or more years ago and they have struggled since. And BTW, while not rich by any measurement I didn't get any of the stimulus money, and I'm not sorry to have missed out...
 
My old man more or less drummed it into us that a degree is all well-and-good, but if you can use your hands coupled with your brain, you will never be hungry. As far as I can tell, he's still correct. If I were asked by a young person what they should pursue as a career, I'd have to say the same. Earn a degree if you can but learn a trade skill as well. "Stuff" will always need repair or replacement, be it a refrigeration unit, batteries in an electric car, a toilet or the ailerons on an aircraft.
 
That's the problem with the Youths of today - they think everything should be free.
They don't realize that SOMEBODY got to pay for it.

Most of the youth I know today are busting a hump, especially if they are in the gig economy. Trying to pay back obscene student debt and often underemployed.

We have a $14 minimum wage in Ontario - (was supposed to be $15 but a new govt. came in) Contrary to every prediction it actually created jobs. (pre covid of course) What people hadn't factored in was that the people in minimum wage jobs immediately put the money back into the economy on deferred needs - especially for children.

very much in agreement though about a robo-world, I especially suspect that the new 'touchless' society will speed that - and, very much wishing that more people would look into trades - there is a huge shortage here. We recently couldn't even get people to return calls.
 
Learn a trade.
Shortly after I came to the States the my Boss wanted me to change from Field service to inspection. Said "You can't do field service all your life" I did not change as I enjoyed the challenge and verity of installation work. 6 months later the inspection job disappeared in a company shuffle. I retired after 35 years doing Field service and am now doing consulting work for my self.
The pay is better and I chose when and if I work.

I installed Elevators for 40 years a good Union job. Seen any one story building going up. Madflyer

Printing machines. We'll see the inflation from this in a year or so.

My school district is already trying to send as many kids virtual as possible and buying up education programs, meaning they won't need many teachers, just people to monitor the kids' progress through the program and to act as a tutor for any kid that is struggling. I am going back to school right now to pursue my PhD and plan on doing research in an archive, museum, or university in the next five years or so once I am done.
 
College is fine, but the young ones better have a back up trade job. I studied Business etc., but always had a mechanical back up. Each time the recession took out a job, I resorted to wrenching on boats or cars, never without a job, and still looked good on a resume.
 
Oh, I've got a few back up trades I can fall back on, I have found that I enjoy writing more though.
