STICKING THROTTLE PLATES

Hello All,

I am a new XKE Series ll owner. I have found the throttle linkage on the inner manifold sticks after shutting the engine down for several hours. I suspect temperature changes to the metal aound the butterfly valves. Could this be the culprit? Is there a fix absent removing this inner manifold?

Currently I simply block the throttle open upon shutdown. It is OK for short shutdowns but once things cool off it binds up again.

Might be dirt build up on surfaces. Have you used a cleaner thru the intakes? Have you checked linkages for binding? Oily residue in the manifold can be smooth while warm and binding on cool down. If previous owner used anything other than 10/40W this does add to problem. Seen it many times in emission tests.
 
I suggest you shoot those throttle bodies with the right cleaner. I've used the CRC stuff in the past with good results. Also give the linkage a good inspection for worn points and proper amount of play. The firewall pivot is a notorious weak point on those cars.
 
I assume you have the original Series II Stromberg carb setup. If your problem is with the secondary butterflies in the manifold and not the throttle butterflies in the carb bodies, it is common to just remove them. If you don't want to do that, adjust the linkage so that those butterflies are a little open when the throttle butterflies are adjusted for idle.

The ultimate solution is to convert to SUs.

Thanks for the ideas. Short of removing the innner throttle plates I guess I could wire them open huh?

I will try some carb cleaner. the other linkage checks out OK. Any possibility those sticking butterfly valves (when cold) could be part of the anti smog system?
 
I see no reason why you couldn't wire them open. you would probably need to remove a piece of the linkage. They were a part of the emissions hardware.
