A couple of weeks ago my wife and I, along with another couple, picked up new BMWs in Munich and then drove around Germany, Austria, Switzerland and a little bit of northern Italy. I had anticipated driving the Stelvio Pass, reputedly one of the better roads in the world to drive with 46 switchbacks. It was great fun as I mentioned in a previous post. I missed the Healey, but those BMW brakes are much better! I promised to put up a few images, so here you go:

As Andrea would say I am sure, The Stelvio is not built for speed - unless you are on a motorcycle. The cycles would fly by us!

I hope in the future have the possibility to test my
AH 100/6 on Stelvio and Gavia Pass, <span style="font-weight: bold">my target</span> is arrival
at the summit with water at "normal" temperature and return to Bormio with the brakes in "efficient" conditions
This is NOT easy target on Alps Roads as you now know

P.S. I have no idea where the cyclists flayed at 85 km/h
on downhill -they probably didn't STOP at Bormio and
are forced to continue 25Km to Tirano for brake heath dissipation
 
Lin, what model BMW? We picked up our 2001 BMW ///M Rdstr at the factory, but alas, they're made in Spartanburg, SC!

Any inside info on when that new M3 powered Healey is going to be available:

I sent in my deposit in 2001 and haven't heard back. :jester:
 
I'd like to put an S-54 engine (3.2/333bhp I-6) in my Healey. I'd just have to fabricate a sump to stand the thing upright, then worry about the inlet/outlet tracts.

Plenty of room to mount the computer under the cowl...

You know, I think I'll just fit this thing to my 99 and call it a day:

Oh yes, Randy. We ALL know you are a BMW guy! The car we picked up is my wife's car. 535i, couldn't get her to go for the 550. That six is soooo smooth though. Really nice ride.

My wife had a 2008 535xi (two turbos/N54 engine) for three (3) years; just an awesome car. Amazingly fast and agile for its mass!

Now she has an '11 model X5 35i, with the same N55 engine (single turbo/twin scroll technology__whatever that is...) that your car has. In the X5 (considerably heavier than your "saloon") the thing is a rocket!

Looking back to when she got the 535xi, probably wasn't the best time to take a trip abroad...

ALL of our other BMWs (both ///M Rdstrs and now three X5s, have all been built in South Carolina).

I'll bet the 535 on the Stelvio Pass was barely breathing hard, wish we could've been part of your convoy :wink:

I remember following that build; that was A LOT of work to use that engine!
 
Don't think of getting a car over these passes but think of the race mechanics driving a 50/60s transporter with three cars loaded, 70-100bhp max, unassisted drum brakes and a turning circle such that you would have to take 2 bites out of every hairpin. Real heroes!
 
Thank you for the pictures! I love this pass a lot althoug I have never been there by car until now. Thee years ago I went up the Stelvio by a racing bicycle and had a very good downhill ride afterwards. Further more I hope to come to Stelvio by my Lotus Elise this September.

Stelvio is an inofficilly test track in the Alps for Lotus steet cars and every year around the 13th September a lot of Lotus enthusiasts from all over Europe come to Stelvio to celebrate the launch of the Elise in 1996.
