Hi Everyone,

I just joined the other day and was posting my TR3 issue on the new members thread. I received some very helpful advice, but Basil suggested I post it again here to reach a larger audience, so thanks to those of you who already responded. If others have some advice, I'm all ears. My challenge is described below:

My 59 TR3A was steering fine a couple of weeks ago, but now the car won't turn to the left. Turning to the right is fine, but turning left, the steering wheel just comes to an abrupt stop. It turns maybe 10 degrees. This isn't a stiff steering issue, it's just like something is blocking the turn...

Obviously, first step is a visual inspection. Maybe a rock got lodged somewhere it shouldn't be? Then I would start disconnecting components, starting with the outer tie rod ends from the steering levers, to try to isolate which component is binding.

I've not had a problem quite like yours, but I have had an idler arm that bound up rather suddenly. Turns out it's not a good idea to paint the shaft :smile:

Those joints use locking tapers, which can be tough to get apart. I find that this style of tool works better for me than the "two big hammers" or "pickle fork" approaches.

Thanks for the help. I reset the rocker shaft in the worm gear, replaced the steering box cover plate, and now it turns to the left just fine. Not sure why, but all seems fine...all a bit mysterious.
