steering wheel scratches

Hi,

I recently purhased a steering wheel with some scratches in it, Were the original wheels painted with enamel or were they just a bakelite material without any paint? I was wondering if
I should just use compound to smooth out the scratches. I also purchased the column, stator tube, control head, and steering gear box to switch over to fixed steering column.

Thanks,

I'd try compound on the scratches and finish with a plastic polish in finor flavors (NOVUS)to finish it.
I have the original control head and I polished it then clear coated with a rattle can. I wouldn't do that to the rim tho as your constant handling will eventually turn the paint to a gum....ok on the CH tho...you could actually spray paint the control head a gloss black as they were initialy pretty shiny but I wanted to retain some patina.
