I have an original steering wheel and am getting ready to put on a new cover. I am going to paint it before I cover it, and I have a few questions I am hoping for some help on. 1) How do you remove the horn button and surrounding pieces? 2) Was the original black paint satin, semi-gloss, or gloss? 3) Is there a special type of thread that was used originally to sew the cover? don't know if it makes a difference, but it is an early 69. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re:#1. The hex bolts (5/16") surrounding the padded vinyl plinth can be removed and with it the horn push. Once that is done the entire steering wheel can be easily pulled away from the aluminum base.
Re:#2. Does the wheel have the flat aluminum spokes with the tapering hole diameters? If so I painted mine with SEM 39143 Trim Black (15 oz.spray). Looks great and has held up well. Is it identical to original? Don't know.
Re:#3. My steering wheel rim is covered with one of those perforated vinyl covers from the auto parts store and I can't, by this time, remember what was on the original rim but is seems to me that it was thin (hard or soft) plastic. So, sorry cannot help you on that.

My 6 has the later satin silver finish on the spokes so I cant help with the paint, but I'm sure it was not gloss black. I would think it would be a satin finish to keep any glare down. The wheel did not have any stiches in it. It was a soft rubber that looked like it had the stiches. Some people even say it was leather. To remove the horn push, pull off the rubber surround and then use screwdriver and pry off the metal ring that is just under the plastic horn push. After reading your thread again you mention you want a new cover installed. Any cover that was installed was aftermarket. I have a Moss cover for my 3 that came with the car and never was installed and came with instructions on how to thread it.
 
When I bought my TR6 17 years ago, I spray painted(can) the steering wheel semi-gloss black. It still looks pretty good 17 years later.
