TR6 Steering wheel play

I have some play in the steering column- enough to cause problems with the horns. Can anyone that has refurbished their steering column give me some advice on how to fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I did this on my TR4 a couple of years ago and it isn't too hard, just a little time consuming. You'll need to pull the steering column out. Inside the upper column are two bushings which can be replaced. Roadster Factory has a nice kit, I'm sure Moss has the parts too. I used some threaded rod and washers to remove the old bushings as well as reinstall the new ones.

Yes, I think there is a felt packing piece and a finisher piece but the main work is the two bushings. Not sure what year your TR6 is, but my guess is you have a locking column - I don't think that creates a problem for the install other than extra things to disconnect but someone more familiar may correct me.
 
He's got a 69 so no locking column.
My guess it's close to the same as yours

Kevin-is the play at the vertices of the column. Or is it turning the wheel left to right and no movement in the wheels

Bob has a great reference site for sure - but unfortunately I don't think Art Lipp is selling those delrin bushings anymore - at least he said no a couple of years ago when I was working through my steering column. Its a neat solution though, and not pulling the column out is a definitely plus.
 
I bought the bushings for the accelerator bar from Art Lip and they work great. Best of al they were easy to install. I need to check out all the information you guys listed, but if he sells a kit for the steering column in which I don't have to remove the column, I am going to try it. Thanks for all the information everyone!

Art did stop selling them for a short time while he was redesigning them for a better fit and easier installation. No need to remove the old bushings as the new ones go on with the old ones in place. You will want to order a new rubber coupling as the old one is probably split.......... which you can't see until you take it apart. Thanks again for all the information. Is it really that difficult to remove/replace the stock bushings in? It looks like I will have to remove the steering column anyway.
